8th Auricula Show Results

On a dull Spring morning the Kent Group held their 11th Annual Show.  As the exhibitors arrived and prepared their plants for the show benches it became a hotbed of activity.  As each exhibit was benched the hall became bright and Spring like with the beautiful, vibrant colours of the various plants on show.

To give an example of the many entries in some of the classes, in the Show Auricula Class there was Northern Blue, Freya, Joel, Strawberry Fields, Brasso, Regency Carousel , to name but a few. The Alpines Class had Argus, Sirius, Ian Greville, Stella North, Ancient Society, Otto Dix, John Wayne to name a few. In the Double Auricula Class Lincoln Chestnut, Lincoln Bullion, Avon Carrier, Chiquita, Vesuvias, Geoff Watt staged a good double seedling, which took the honours & now named “Gurkha Heroes”.  Border Auricula’s had Chamois, Bowens Blue, Old Forge Red, Eden Greenfinch & a large number of Border seedlings staged by Bert “the Border” Dawson .  This class was well supported with more entries than in previous years.  The other classes were also well supported and every class had fresh, well proportioned & beautifully staged specimens.  The results for each entrant were:

The Show was opened to visitors who enjoyed the many exhibits and had questions answered by members of the Society.  The Plant sales table was 5 deep at times and our thanks got to members who donated plants and some also sold on a 50%:50% basis.

Finally, the raffle was drawn and our Chairman, Colin Humphrey, thanked all those who entered the show, the committee who helped with setting up the hall and making the show another success.  He also welcomed everyone to the final meeting of the year, our Auricula Theatre which was being set up in the Hawkhurst Walled Garden nursery on May 3rd, we had 120 plants on display for the Public to view who enjoyed these beautiful plants & asked lots of cultural questions.  We attracted 4 new members at this event and hoped to see them & everyone again when our new season commences in September.
