The morning of the Kent Group’s 12th Annual Show was, in contrast to last year, a bright and fresh start to the day. The hall was a hive of activity with the committee ‘buzzing’ around to set it up ready for exhibitors to stage their plants. Unfortunately, this year we did not have as many entries as normal due to it being a Bank Holiday, some of our major exhibitors unwell and holidays. Nevertheless, a very good display of plants was set out for the Judges to deliberate over. In the Show Auricula Class we had many exhibits such as Brick Lane, Red Ember, Clare, Cuckoo Fair, Sunflower and Greta. In the Alpine Auricula Class Gail Atkinson, Ancient Society, Our Luke and Sirbol. The Double Auricula Class had Schicchi, Rebecca Baker and Vesuvius. Border Auricula Class contained 3 seedlings which were entered by Jan Francis and Joan King. Plus many other in further Class sections. The above is a small example of the wonderful exhibits on display each one being fresh, well proportioned, beautifully staged specimens. The results for each entrant were:
Once again the Novice classes attracted a good number of entries with some of our newer members entering only one class and winning firsts, which has given them encouragement and confidence to enter more classes next year. Trophies were awarded as follows: Tom Stephenson shield – for the best plant in Sections 1 – 5a Colin Humphrey (Clare) Society Spoons – three were awarded The Show was opened to visitors who enjoyed the exhibits and had questions answered by members of the Society. The Plant sales table was covered with plants which sold very well and our thanks go to members who donated plants and helped by manning the table. Finally, the raffle was drawn and our Chairman, Colin Humphrey, thanked all those who entered the show, the committee who helped with setting up the hall and making the show another success. He also welcomed everyone to the final meeting of the year, our Auricula Theatre which was set up on May 3rd in Bumbles Nursery, where many plants were on display for the Public to view and who enjoyed these beautiful plants as well as asking questions about them. We look forward to seeing our members in September 2016 when our next Season begins. Sue Forrester |
